Hotels near the Accademia Gallery

The best base for a visit to the David is an area, not a single hotel. The Accademia is at Via Ricasoli 58 to 60. San Marco is its own neighbourhood and the end of tram T2. The Duomo is about 5 minutes away on foot along Via Ricasoli. San Lorenzo and Santa Croce are alternatives with their own sights.

Walking times to the gallery are estimates, so measure the route from your exact address before you book. Once you have a base, see getting there for routes and Accademia Gallery tickets for your time slot.

San Marco and the Duomo

The two areas closest to the gallery.

San Marco

This is where the Accademia stands, and tram T2 ends here, which helps if you arrive from the airport. The Museo di San Marco at Piazza San Marco 3 holds panels and frescoes by Fra Angelico. Piazza Santissima Annunziata, with the Ospedale degli Innocenti, is nearby.

Things to do near the Accademia โ†’

The Duomo area

The cathedral square is the usual starting point for the walk to the gallery along Via Ricasoli, about 5 minutes. The cathedral and its monuments have their own guide at where to stay near the Duomo.

What neighbourhood names mean

Florence's districts are informal labels, not official hotel zones. Check the street address and a map rather than the name alone.

San Lorenzo and Santa Croce

Two alternatives with a different focus.

San Lorenzo

The Basilica di San Lorenzo, the market hall and Palazzo Medici Riccardi on Via Cavour define the area. The Medici Chapels are at Piazza di Madonna degli Aldobrandini 6, open Tuesday to Sunday 08:15โ€“18:50 and closed on Mondays. At the Mercato Centrale the ground floor is open Monday to Friday 09:00โ€“15:00 and Saturday until 17:00, and the upper floor daily from 08:00 to midnight.

Michelangelo in Florence โ†’

Santa Croce

The basilica holds a monument to Michelangelo, and Casa Buonarroti is at Via Ghibellina 70. This makes the area a sensible base for those two sights. It says nothing about the quality of stays there. The walk to the Accademia depends on your address.

Walking time to the gallery

No area has one fixed walk to the gallery, because it depends on your hotel's address. Look up the route from your address, and remember that a suitcase and the bag rules slow you down.

What to check before you book a room

A short list for any area.

The street address

Measure the walk to Via Ricasoli from the exact address. The same area can mean a few minutes or a longer walk.

Car access

Much of the centre is a limited traffic zone with camera enforcement. If you arrive by car, ask the hotel about access and parking before you book. More on this is on the getting there page.

Luggage on the day

The Accademia has no cloakroom, and bags over 40 ร— 30 ร— 18 cm are not allowed. Ask whether the hotel keeps luggage on check-out day.

Your travel dates

March to October is the busier stretch, so book early for those months. See the best time to see the David for the seasons.

Across the river, the Oltrarno has its own character. The bridge and the district are covered in where to stay near Ponte Vecchio.

Where to stay near the Accademia: frequently asked questions

Which area is closest to the Accademia Gallery?

San Marco is the neighbourhood where the gallery stands. The Duomo is about 5 minutes away on foot, a walking estimate.

Is it better to stay in San Marco or near the Duomo?

For most visitors who come mainly for the David, either works. San Marco is next to the gallery and the end of tram T2, and the Duomo area puts more of the centre within walking distance.

Where should I stay for the Medici Chapels?

San Lorenzo. The chapels are at Piazza di Madonna degli Aldobrandini 6, in the same area as the basilica, the market hall and Palazzo Medici Riccardi.

Which area suits Michelangelo's other sights?

Santa Croce is a sensible base for the basilica with his monument and for Casa Buonarroti on Via Ghibellina. It is a choice by location, not a quality rating.

Do you recommend a hotel?

No. Pick the area first, then compare rooms on a booking platform and check the street address on a map.

Is this an official guide of the Accademia or the city?

No. This is an independent guide, not connected to the museum, the Bargello museums or the city of Florence.
